Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a building material that can be used in a variety of ways that provides a myriad of advantages to construction projects. It’s a fairly inexpensive material, with plenty of toughness and durability that ensures your structure will be sturdy and last for a long time. It’s also easily moldable to allow for greater flexibility in design and construction than could otherwise be the case. This flexibility is essential to any construction project.

There are a number of different kinds of steel materials that are available, but the most popular are stainless steel and mild. The proportions of elements such as carbon, iron and chromium in these alloys determine their individual properties and their appropriate use. Steels with a high content of chromium are extremely hard but also flexible and resistant to corrosion. These are used in automobile parts and kitchen appliances.

Other alloys can also be used for specific uses. Tool steel is abrasion-resistant and very tough. It is employed in knives and hammers. Nickel steel is corrosion resistant, strong and has excellent welding properties. This kind of steel is a popular choice for metal chains and wire products. Tungsten steel is heat-resistant and it makes great drill bits.

Another popular type of steel used in construction is called structural steel. It’s usually medium or low carbon, making it tough enough to support large structures, but flexible enough to endure the effects of earth shifting. It’s common in pre-engineered metal structures, which are constructed with I-beams as well as rebar steel rods to reinforce concrete elements.
